Compusure in a Life Threatening Situation, 2 Detectives Act Quickly to Save a Gunshot Victim, LAKE LIVINGSTON VILLAGE, March 27, 2024 - A 10:42 am on March 1, 2024, two Polk County Sheriff’s Office Detectives (Adrian Ontiveros and Christian Schanmier) arrived expeditiously to a shooting/gunshot victim, in Lake Livingston Village. The victim had accidently shot himself in the leg and called 911, advising Dispatch for first responders to, “Hurry”.
When the detectives arrived, thety both observed that the male victim had accidently shot himself in the leg, was losing a significant amount of blood, appeared to be going into shock, and losing consciousness. While Detective Ontiveros immediately applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg to prevent further blood loss, Detective Schanmier provided further life-saving measures by removing field dressing from his medical pouch and applying direct pressure while wrapping the leg/wound to stop the bleeding completely. Both Detectives then stabilized the victim to keep him conscious until EMS arrived.
Ontiveros and Schanmier’s quick response and immediate actions resulted directly in saving the life of the gunshot victim. They demonstrated exceptional performance and composure in a life-threatening situation to save a life, which, without such intervention, would have very likely resulted in death.
Today, March 13, 2024, Detective Ontiveros and Detective Schanmier both received a Lifesaving Award for their heroic actions, with family, friends and co-workers all in attendance.
