Band Students Work Hard at LISD Band Camp Livingston High School - It’s what every teenager really wants to do for summer vacation – get up at 5:30am, get dressed, walk a few hundred yards and back to grab an instrument and fall in on a narrow road to practice marching. Well, maybe not every teenager wants to spend their vacation this way. That is exactly what many members of the LHS Royal Brigade did each day at their annual Band Camp.
This camp was held to prepare this year’s band for performance and competition in UIL marching. On Saturday August 1, approximately 85 students travelled to Gary, Texas to spend four days at the Daniel Springs Baptist Encampment working on what they hope to be a successful season. Each day after a period of fundamental marching, students were fed a healthy breakfast which was followed by a short break before beginning their morning marching rehearsal.
After nearly three hours of fun in the sun, being careful to take enough breaks and get enough fluids, they then broke into section rehearsals to further prepare the music. Following lunch, students had a two hour music rehearsal inside the camp pavilion due to the afternoon heat. After the evening meal, they had more rehearsals. This is not to say that camp was all work and no fun.
As teens do, they managed to have fun. Swimming in the afternoon and supervised activities following the evening rehearsal. The next morning, it all began again. At the camp, directors managed to get most of the opening drill done. By the time we came home, every student in the drill knew each step to be taken. We still have work to do on music, but with a few weeks to go before their 2009 debut, the brigade is poised to have a good year. Ask any member of the Royal Brigade what happened at band camp and they will tell you that Band Happened. Join us this season for some great music and entertainment.

Dallas, Texas - Livingston FFA members were welcomed by the State Officer Team to the 81st Annual Texas FFA Convention held in Dallas from July 5-10, 2009. The officers encouraged the members of the Texas FFA to discover their dreams while partaking in the unbelievable journey known as the FFA. “This convention is going to open your eyes to the thousands of opportunities offered through FFA. We want you to discover you hopes and desires, but more importantly you dreams,” commented the State Officers.
While attending the convention, members had the opportunity to experience many key events, including hearing multiple keynote addresses from exceptional speakers; retiring address from the state officer team, as well as exciting election speeches from the incoming state officers; making history as they served as voting delegates and voted on important business matters concerning the future of FFA; recognizing thousands of members for their many successes in FFA; and electing the 2009-2010 state traveling team, including the Texas FFA President.
Katelyn Pulley, former eighth grader at Livingston Jr. High, competed in the Jr. Prepared Public Speaking Contest on Monday, July 6, 2009. For this contest, she researched, prepared and presented a speech about eminent domain entitled, “This Land is My Land.” Several main topics in her presentation to the judges included, “What is eminent domain,” “Who is involved,” and “What happens during the eminent domain process?“. Katelyn qualified for the state contest by winning the district level competition in February, and being honored as the top speaker out of more than 90 schools at the area level in May. At the state contest, Katelyn received a semi-finalist plaque and state-wide recognition. “Only the best twenty speakers in the state were invited to compete in this contest held during the state convention. Livingston FFA is extremely proud of Katelyn’s accomplishments on the district, area and state level and are looking forward to next year!”, commented Jessica Graham, Livingston FFA Advisor.
On Tuesday, July 7, 2009, four members of the Livingston FFA Chapter walked across the stage and shook hands with Texas FFA President Matthew Barnes as they received the highest FFA degree a member could earn: the Lonestar FFA Degree. As stated in the degree ceremony, “The State FFA Degree is the highest degree our state association can bestow.” In order to receive the Lonestar FFA Degree, members were to meet the requirements of the Greenhand and Chapter FFA Degrees in previous years in order to advance to the state degree, symbolizing their growth and development in agriculture. Among those earning their Lonestar FFA Degree were Jacob Dominy, Kayla Franklin, Keith Vandiver and Bronson Worthy.
The Texas FFA Association is proud to award more than $2 million in scholarships to deserving FFA members. Scholarships recognized members' academic accomplishments as well as participation in FFA programs and activities. Stephen Smith, 2009 Livingston FFA President and graduate of LHS, received a $10,000 scholarship from the Richard Wallrath Educational Foundation. Stephen was honored on stage by Mr. Wallrath, as well as at a luncheon attended by all scholarship recipients.
As the 81st Annual Texas FFA Convention came to a close on Friday, July 10, the Livingston FFA members in attendance at the convention all agreed that the week provided them with many opportunities to grow as a person; allowed them to create many new friendships from all over the state; and offered them an amazing time of leadership, learning and fun as they discovered their dreams in the Texas FFA Association.
The Texas FFA Association is made up of over 63,000 members. The organization’s mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and their Ladies Auxiliary recently held their 89th Annual State Convention in Corpus Christi. During the convention, Sarah Kennedy, of Livingston, was awarded the title of "Outstanding Young Volunteer" for the Department of Texas. In March, she won at the local level for Post 8568. Her essay, community service record and personal recommendations advanced to the state level, which includes all VFW posts in the state. Amanda Walker, Youth Activities Chairman for the Ladies Auxiliary, said the Auxiliary was very proud of Sarah and her accomplishments. It is the first time Post 8568 Ladies Auxiliary has sponsored the winning applicant. The Outstanding Youth Volunteer is a national program open to all 12-15 year olds that perform service to their community during the year. The competition is sponsored by the VFW's Ladies Auxiliary. Sarah has helped several organizations and individuals over the past few years that include school events, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Livingston Youth Soccer, VFW's Hospital Program, SAAFE House, SPCA, FAITH, SPURS Horse Program, Ronald McDonald House, local nursing homes and the City of Livingston. State Chairman for Youth Activities, Christene Funderburg of Abilene, stated, "I am moved and inspired by Sarah's compassion, dedication and hard work. The committee is in awe of her!" Sarah stated that she loves to volunteer because of the many different people she gets to meet. She is the daughter of Stephen and Destiny Kennedy. She is sophomore at Livingston High School.
