Baby Steps: Young Lions Learn to Win, LIVINGSTON, October 19, 2013 - Baby steps are tough. Emotional and happy they may be, but they're accompanied by trips, loss of balance, falls, pain, and tests of confidence. The young Lions are taking their baby steps, and there's a lot of falling, but these Lions are growing and their steps are showing progress. When the Lumberton Raiders came to town on Friday night, the Lions took the field, and ultimately took the game for their first win of the season. It was a nice thing to see the happiness on the faces of the kids as they ran off the field while the last few seconds ticked off the clock.
Scoring Summary
First Quarter:
5:39, Lumberton attempts a punt from their own endzone, but a bad snap and a bobbled ball led to a safety as the punter saw that he couldn't get the kick off, so he threw it out of the back of the endzone. Lions 2, Raiders 0
Second Quarter:
6:24, Raiders throw a 15 yard TD pass and missed the PAT. Raiders 6, Lions 2
Third Quarter:
2:03, Raiders kick about a 35 yard field goal. Raiders 9, Lions 2
Fourth Quarter:
11:26, Quarterback Kurt Wilson throws 35 yard TD pass to Cole McAdams and then made PAT. Game tied at 9 apiece.
2:24, Running Back David Caddy takes a handoff and runs in a TD from 5 yards out. Lions convert PAT: Final Score: Lions 16, Raiders 9.
When the Lions scored that last TD with 2:24 remaining on the clock, I was concerned about too much time being left for the pass happy Raiders to work the ball down the field and send the game into overtime. Sure enough they came out throwing and began moving the chains with an effective air attack. The Lion defense gave a little, but ultimately held. The Lion secondary was tested throughout the game, and did get burned a few times, but they also learned, and when it came down to the last seconds, they held. The defensive line was equally responsible for the pressure that they were putting on the Raider quarterback who was also a decent runner. Congratulations to the Lions for securing that first victory, but there's much more pain to go through. Bumps, bruises, falls, and tests of their will, but they'll be alright (they're Rowe's kids, they're pretty tough).
