Young Lions Making Baby Steps, LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE, September 28, 2013 - The Livingston Lions varsity football team is getting better. In the game of football, prescense of mind at all times on the field is a must. These young Lions are learning the hard way about this fundamental necessity. They went to Little Cypress-Mauriceville and put on a decent and respectable game, but it could have been so much better had they had they won, and they could have. When you make mistakes like fumbling the ball away just as you're about to cross the goal line for a touchdown, it's gonna come back and bite you in the worst way. When you muff a punt and the other team gets the ball, it's gonna hurt you...BAD. When you drop a possible interception that hits you right in the hands, you just lost a goden opportunity. When you try to strip the ball rather than wrapping up and driving into the ground, it's gonna hurt you. These are fundamental things that the Lions are learning the hard way. You can't get away from the basics if you want to win. Catch the ball, hold on to the ball, wrap up and drive into the ground. LC-M exploited these flaws and squeeked out a win. Don't let my negativeness get ya too down. These Lions are learning, and in spite of these fundamental gaffes, still managed to nearly pull off an upset.

More commentary:
The Lions showed a lot of heart and fight last night. They had to overcome their own mistakes and nearly put together a comeback drive in the final 2 minutes of the game as they were driving to tie the game and possibly sending it into overtime. They drove to about the 25 when the ball was intercepted and snuffed out the comeback.
In spite of the loss, these young Lions are impressing me. I'm seeing lots of positives. The offensive line is giving our backfield good protection and allowing freshman quaterback Kurt Wilson time to pass. The defensive line anchored by Miguel Rodriguez was holding their own. The Lions passing game is looking as good as I've seen it (which is kinda scary when you consider our QB is only a freshman). We have a decent stable of running backs led by senior Bromarri Ferrell, and also includes sophomore David Caddie, and senior Xavier Hutchison (these running backs are improving and had a host of impressive runs last night). I'm starting to see that much needed nastiness from some of the defensive players like number 8, junior Jaquavious Nickson, and number 22, junior Montana Mikulec. When it comes to defense, a nasty (but controlled) attitude from just a few of the players can make a huge difference.
I have to be honest, it's a lot of fun watching these kids learning and working together as a team. I find it particularly fun to watch the young quarterback as he confidently leads the offense. Don't get too down over a loss, these kids are coming right along. Next week promises to be a very tough game as Nederland will come calling. The Lion's Den, 7:30 pm. Come watch and support the young Lions! Its cheap, fun, and family friendly :)
