Young Lions Take Their Lumps in Season Opener, LIVINGSTON, August 31, 2013 - The Livingston Lions varsity football team opened the 2013 season with an ugly loss. These Lions are young, with only has a handful of seniors, going up against a 5A playoff calliber team like College Park couldn't be easy (and it wasn't).
Scoring Summary...
The College Park Cavaliers scored a touchdown on the game's opening possession, and again with 1:58 remaining in the first quarter on a pass for a touchdown. They missed the PAT on the second TD. Cavs 13, Lions 0.
In the second quarter, the Cavs scored their third TD to cap off a drive with a running play. With 7:41 remaining in the second quarter, the Cavs' defense intercepted a Lion pass when the Lions were deep in their own territory. The Cavs returned it for an easy score, and with 1:23 remaining in the half, the Cavs scooped up a Lion fumble and took it to the house. At halftime, it was Cavs 34, Lions 0.
In the third quarter, the Cavs scored again on a TD pass on their first possession of the second half. Cavs 40, Lions 0. Around midway through the second half, the Cavilier's head coach called off the dogs and played mostly his second string players.
Eureka!...
In the fourth quarter, the Lions managed to score. Xavier Hutchison took a handoff from quarterback Kurt Wilson and punched through the Cavs' goal line defense for the Lions first touchdown of 2013. The scene would repeat itself with 1:53 remaining in the game as Hutchison once again took a handoff for another short touchdown. The final score would be, College Park Cavaliers, 40, Lions 13.
Comment: This was an ugly game for the Lions, as they were outmatched by a larger school with a more experienced team. But when the Lions scored in the 4th, I could sense that they began to believe in themselves. A short time later when the Lions scored again, I could feel this team of youngsters starting to grow. The paradox is, it's one of those games the Lions should probably forget about, but at the same time, they need to remember. That's where head coach Randy Rowe and his staff of coaches come in. I have no doubt that Rowe will know exactly what this team needs to hear. The lessons of this youthful team will resume next Friday in Dayton as they will face our nemesis, the Dayton Broncos. It should be a good game, the Broncos themselves took their opening season lumps as they were punished 55 to 13 by Fort Bend Elkins.
