Cleveland Man Dies While in Polk County Jail, LIVINGSTON, June 13, 2008 - On June 11, 2008, a Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) arrested and charged 53 year old Leroy Clifton Johnson Jr. of Cleveland with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).  Johnson was taken to Livingston Memorial Hospital to have a blood sample drawn.  At approximately 3:30 pm he was transported to Polk County Jail.

On June 12, 2008, at approximately 2:30 am, officers went to the visitation area to get Johnson in order to book him in when he was discovered deceased in his cell.  Johnson was in the visitation area alone where he could be monitored at all times from the control office area due to him being intoxicated when he was brought to jail.  Foul play  is not suspected and the case is being investigated by Texas Ranger, Ron Duff.

Johnson was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, Darrell Longino and was transported to the Harris County Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.
