UPDATE ON AUTO / PEDESTRIAN FATAL ACCIDENT:Victim Identified in Auto / Pedestrian Fatal Accident, NEW WILLARD, September 1, 2023 - The name of the man who was killed by an apparent auto/pedestrian accident sometime during the night on August 31, 2023 has been identified. Andrew Millsap, Jr., 57, of Lufkin was found deceased in the center median of US-59 in the morning on August 31, 2023. Evidence at the scene suggests that Millsap was attempting to cross on foot from the south-bound side of 59 to the north-bound side and was struck by a south-bound vehicle. When the apparent accident happened, the driver of the vehicle didn't stop. This accident remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol.
Apparent Auto/Pedestrian Accident, Deceased Man Found off US-59, NEW WILLARD, August 31, 2023 - Early on Thursday morning during the 10 am hour (08/31/23) Deputy Michael McDuffie with the Polk County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to US-59 just north of North Glen Road. A man was reported to be laying in the center median between the north-bound and south-bound lanes of 59. Deputy McDuffie arrived to find an unresponsive man (black male, possibly in his 50s) laying in the center median. Allegiance Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene to confirm that the man was deceased and apparently struck by a vehicle. Trooper Sean Barnes was dispatched to investigate. Preliminarily, it appears that the man was struck while crossing the south-bound side of 59 towards the north-bound side. The man had no identification on him and it is still not known who the man is. Justice of the Peace, Robert "Dooley" Johnson filed an inquest at the scene and ordered an autopsy. A first-call car from Cochran Funeral Home transported the victim from the scene. This accident remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol.
