Car Fire on US-59 in Goodrich, GOODRICH, September 1, 2008 - At approximately 12 noon on September 1, 2008, a silver Dodge Neon driven by Melissa Burton, 23 of Shepherd was north-bound on US 59 in Goodrich when she noticed smoke coming from the rear of her vehicle. In a matter of seconds, the interior of her car was on fire. Burton pulled her car over to the right of 59, got out of the car, and called 911. A fire engine from Goodrich Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene. By now the car's interior was engulfed in flames. Volunteer Firefighters Nita Gokey, William Taylor, Tim McDonald and Russell McDonald extinguished the flames, but not before the car was totaled. DPS Trooper Sam Lattner was dispatched to the scene of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Burton was given a ride to her destination by friends. Traffic was not blocked as the scene was being cleared. According to Burton, she does have insurance, but her insurance papers were in the glove box of the burned out interior. A rollback wrecker from Harwood Wrecker Service towed Burton's vehicle away from the scene. The scene was cleared by 1 pm.
