Trooper Donny Akers conducts a field sobriety test after 3 am on US-59.
Lost and Intoxicated, Driver Arrested for DWI, GOODRICH, July 8, 2012 - At approximately 3 am on July 8, 2012, Trooper Donny Akers with the Texas Highway Patrol was driving on US-59 South a short distance north of the Trinity River Bridge. Akers was looking for a vehicle that was supposed to have run off the road and into the woodline (according to a call that was placed to the Polk County Sheriff's Office). Akers spotted a black Dodge truck that was parked on the shoulder of the south-bound side of 59. Akers pulled over to investigate (Akers was soon backed up by Deputy David Mitchell with the Polk County Sheriff's Office). The driver, 24 year old Ricardo Alfredo Ayala of Houston, stated to Akers that he was lost and trying to get back to Houston. Trooper Akers became suspicious of intoxication and conducted a field sobriety test on Ayala. Ayala struggled on the required tasks for the test and was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Upon further investigation, it was determined that passenger Marya Escalante, 26, of Houston was intoxicated. Escalante was placed under arrest for public intoxication. A rollback wrecker from Fawbush Body Shop recovered the truck and it will be stored in Goodrich.
