41 year old Elvin James Poole, of Washington, Louisiana, remained passed out at the wheel on US-59. No matter what the Deputies tried, Poole wouldn't wake up.
Man Passed Out in Pickup on US-59, GOODRICH, May 21, 2023 - At approximately 11:30 pm on May 20, 2023, calls were placed to the Polk County Sheriff's Office in regards to a white pickup parked on the road in the north-bound side of US-59 across from Loop 393.  Deputy Justin Murdock was dispatched.  Murdock arrived to find the man passed out in the driver's seat.  When Deputy Murdock knocked on the window, the man wouldn't wake up.  Murdock then banged on the window, banged on the truck door and the man was passed out hard.  Other Deputies soon arrived to assist.  With the truck sitting in the road causing danger to both the driver and other vehicles, and with the truck locked, the deputies had no choice but to break the window to gain access.  The window was broken and the driver continued to sleep.  Murdock and the other deputies shook the man and pulled him from his truck.  The driver is identified as Elvin James Poole, 41, of Washington, Louisiana.  EMS personnel were summoned to examine Poole to make sure he was physically not in danger.  Poole was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. A vehicle inventory turned up a pistol and a bottle of Promethazine.  Promethazine is a drug commonly used in prescription cough syrup.  On the street it is known as lean:

Lean, also known as purple drank, purp, sizzurp, syrup, wock or oil, and several other names, is a recreational drug beverage, prepared by mixing prescription strength cough or cold syrup containing codeine and promethazine with a soft drink. The beverage originated in Houston and is popular in hip hop culture, especially within the Southern United States.

The term lean refers to the fact that users may have difficulty standing up straight while under the influence of the drug.[2] "Purple drank" references its typically purple hue, as the cough syrups employed are often purple in color, and an black American Vernacular English term for an alcoholic beverage or intoxicating drink. Other names include "sizzurp", "syrup", "drank", "barre", "purple jelly", "wok", "wock", "Texas tea", "Memphis mud" and "dirty Sprite"
