Teen From Magnolia Drowns at Lake Tomahawk Camp, LIVINGSTON, August 7, 2008 - An 18 year old man drowned at Lake Tomahawk Baptist Encampment. On Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at approximately 12:30 pm, Gabriel Malone, 18, of Magnolia and three other teens walked across a bridge to an island in the middle of the lake. The teens (all wearing loose clothing) then attempted to swim back ashore across a wider part of the lake. Three of the teens turned back while Malone continued to swim. Moments later, Malone began to struggle to stay afloat. Witnesses allegedly told Malone to take off his clothing, Malone then went under and did not come back up. Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens were dispatched to the scene of the drowning and was given assistance by Alabama Coushatta Security and the Fire Department and the Scenic Loop Fire Department. Also dispatched to the scene were Polk County Sheriff's Detectives. Malone was eventually found by Game Warden Ryan Hall. Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace, Darrell Longino performed an inquest and ordered an autopsy to be performed by Dr. Tommy Brown in Jefferson at the South East Texas Forensic Center.
