Prolific Child Molester with Long Record Gets 50 Years, LIVINGSTON, April 6, 2011 - On April 5, 2011 Gabriel Villarreal, 44, of Onalaska, was sentenced to 50 years in prison in District Judge Elizabeth Coker's Court. Villarreal was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child by a Polk County Jury of 12. The assault occurred on July 15, 2010 in Onalaska at a community gathering at a swimming pool. Villarreal digitally (finger) penetrated a 7 year old girl while playing "shark" in the swimming pool. The girl told her mother about the assault. The mother went to Villarreal's house to investigate. When told of the conduct by Villarreal, Villarreal's wife alluded that she knew of others who had been victimized by her husband. Indeed. In Onalaska in 2008 Gabriel Villarreal was opportunistic and went into a bathroom where he knew a 6 year old girl was, cornered her, and molested her. There was another time when he forced himself onto a girl orally.
Gabriel Villarreal Is a Real Piece of Work... Villarreal, who has been jailed since August of 2010 for his sex crimes, tried to make the case that he was not mentally competent to stand trial. Villarreal claimed that he was having hallucinations and would hear voices. A psychologist's evaluation of Villarreal concluded that Villarreal was faking his incompetence, additionally, Villarreal tried to gain social security disability benefits while in jail, and while in jail, claimed that he didn't like being in jail with people who committed "real crimes".
Villarreal Has a Criminal History... - In 1990 Villarreal was charged with armed robbery in Michigan. - Between 1988 and 2009 Villarreal was charged with driving while intoxicated 4 times (3 of the charges resulted in convictions). - In 1994 Villarreal was arrested for possession of cocaine in Brownsville.
The 50 year sentence was part of a plea bargain where, if he pled guilty to the other two charges of molestation, he would be given 50 years with no chance for an appeal. Additionally, the deal keeps the other two cases from coming to trial and saving the young girls from having to take the witness stand and publicly recount the horror of their assaults.
First Assistant Criminal District Attorney, Joe Martin, stated to PolkCountyToday.com, "These kind of cases are always difficult because, essentially, what you have is just a child saying that the defendant violated her, and children, obviously are not professional and practiced witnesses. I am very glad that the jury believed my first victim because that allowed us to obtain justice for both victims and justice for our community".
No Remorse... During impact statements as mothers recounted to Villarreal the severe damage that was inflicted on their daughters, Villarreal sat almost emotionless staring and even appeared to loathe their very presence and appeared to show absolutely no remorse for his self serving evil deeds.
Gabriel Villarreal will not be eligible for parole for 25 years. Even then, there's no guarantees that the then 69 year old would be granted parole. Villarreal will be gone for a long time, and in all likelihood will die and prison.
