Only a Freshman, This 2011 LHS Graduate is an Impact Player in Women's Volleyball, NACOGDOCHES, October 2, 2012 - For the second time in three weeks Stephen F. Austin freshman middle blocker Cara Leslie has earned a weekly honor from the Southland Conference after being named the league's defensive player of the week after conference officials announced the selection Monday afternoon.
Leslie, who was named the SLC Offensive Player of the Week two weeks ago after the opening week of league play, averaged 1.88 blocks per set in a pair of matches on the week in helping keep the Ladyjacks in a tie for first place atop the Southland Conference.
She was the first SFA freshman since Lauren Railey in 2005 to win league's offensive player of the week and now is the first Ladyjack freshman since teammate Madison Hanlan to earn a weekly honor twice in a season.
A native of Livingston, Texas, Leslie had three blocks - including one solo - in SFA's sweep of Oral Roberts on Thursday before having a hand in 12 rejections in Saturday's five-set loss to league favorite Central Arkansas. The 12 blocks is tied for the fifth most in a single match in SFA history and is the most by any player in the Southland this season.
In addition to her defensive prowess, she also had a standout week offensively, averaging 3.00 kills per set and hitting at an exceptional .308 clip.
Currently she leads the team and ranks fifth in the SLC with 1.00 blocks per set for the season. That includes 1.45 per set in conference-only matches, which ranks second in the league.
Leslie and the Ladyjacks continue SLC play this week on the road, beginning Thursday at Sam Houston State before traveling south to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
