Wildcats Do Hatchet Job on High Ranked Wolves as Push For State Continues, HUDSON, March 1, 2016 - There was a bit more hype going into this game, some people even saying that this was a "big test".  The San Augustine Wolves were one of the top rated 2A teams in the country.  The Big Sandy Wildcats hardly blinked an eye and proved to be the much better team in this contest.  The game started slow, and was a defensive struggle at times.  The San Augustine Wolves held a lead for a couple of minutes as the teams were still working out some nerves and getting a feel for each other.  At the end of the first quarter Big Sandy was ahead 18-10.  The way I saw it, that’s only 4 baskets or possibly less.  The Wildcats started to establish their dominance on both sides of the ball in the second quarter as they outscored the Wolves 16-6, making it 34-16 at the half.  With the hype going in to this one, I was waiting for the Wolves to explode (but it never happened).  After halftime, the Wildcats continued to ground and pound and racked up a 60-30 lead by the end of 3.  Soon, it was all said and done as Wolves fans started to slowly trickle out of the arena, and the purple ocean grew louder.  Final score: Wildcats 72, Wolves 40.

It’s amazing to watch this team adapt to different games and changing to adapt to the competition they face.  The Big Sandy Wildcats have proven themselves to be one of the best of 2016.  According to a reputable high school sports website, the Wildcats rank moved up to to 1st in the state after Tuesday night's game.  That night after the game, we were leaving a restaurant and a man who was from Woden approached me because of my Wildcats Playoffs t-shirt.  He said to me “That is the best team I’ve seen in a long time, the teamwork is something really special to watch. You guys are going all the way."  The Wildcats next game will be against the Grapeland Sandies, Friday at 5pm, at Leon High School in Jewett, TX. This game will be the Regional Semi Final, and if the Wildcats advance, the following day (Saturday) would be the Regional Final game.  I’ll be there Friday to catch the action!
