Pickup Slams Into 18 Wheeler, Driver Hospitalized with Serious Injuries, GOODRICH, December 19, 2017 - At approximately 2:05 am on December 19, 2017, a black 1989 GMC pickup, driven by Matthew Read, 21, of Livingston, was north-bound on US-59 a short distance north of Goodrich (Near Livingston Inn). Read suddenly slammed into the passenger's side back corner of an 18 wheeler driven by Musazgi Tsehaye Mebrathu, 32, of Dallas. Mebrathu was also north-bound in a designated truck turn around lane designed to help rigs cross to the south-bound side of 59 safely. However, Mebrathu decided to make a wide left turn and swung his rig out wide (right) into Read's lane. Read's pickup slammed into the rear passenger's side corner of the trailer portion of the rig. The impact caved in the driver's side of Read's pickup and pinned him into the driver's seat. Mebrathu continued to turn around to the south-bound side of 59 where he pulled to the right shoulder and stopped. Read's vehicle came to rest in the middle of the north-bound side of 59. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department, Deputies Teddy Sims and Sergeant Byron Dunaway with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, and Corporal Ramey Bass with the Texas Highway Patrol. Firemen used the Jaws-of-Life to cut the roof off of Read's pickup, then, using the jaws, continued to cut Read's pickup from around him. Read had very serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to CHI Livingston Memorial Hospital. All traffic on the north-bound side of 59 was blocked during investigation and cleanup. Mebrathu was cited for causing the accident. Read's pickup was recovered by Fawbush Wrecker Service. Mebrathu's 18 wheeler was driven from the scene.
