Driver Passes Away From Accident On 190 East, LIVINGSTON, October 20, 2011 - Daniel Jefferson Self, 80, of Livingston was transported to Livingston Memorial Hospital from the accident this morning on 190 East and died a short time later. Self was east-bound on US-190 East in his 2007 Mercury Mariner. Self pulled onto the shoulder and then attempted a U-turn in front of oncoming east-bound traffic. Troopers from Polk County converge on the scene to investigat a major accident on US-190 East on Thursday morning.
Critical Condition; Driver Hospitalized in Accident on 190 East, LIVINGSTON, October 20, 2011 - Just minutes after 10 am on October 20, 2011, a tan 2007 Mercury Mariner driven by Daniel Jefferson Self, 80, of Livingston, was east-bound on US-190 East. Self pulled onto the shoulder and then attempted a U-turn in front of oncoming east-bound traffic. Self was broadsided by a burgundy colored 1993 Ford F-250 driven by Elmer John Walter, Jr., 65, of Porter. Walter swerved left to avoid colliding with Self but the collision was unavoidable. The collision knocked Self's vehicle through the west-bound lanes and off the pavement where his vehicle spun out into the grass. Elmer Walter pulled his truck (also pulling a trailer) off to the shoulder of the west-bound lanes. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department Heavy Rescue Unit and handful of Troopers including Trooper David Morris with the Texas Highway Patrol. Daniel Self was treated by EMS personnel from Americare at the scene and transported to Livingston Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Elmer Walter was also transported to Livingston Memorial with undisclosed injuries that are not believed to be critical. Traffic on both sides of 190 was partially blocked during investigation and cleanup. According to Trooper Morris, the accident is still under investigation. A rollback wrecker from Ken's Towing recovered Self's vehicle and it will be stored at Harrison Body Shop in Livingston. Walter's vehicle was recovered by Fawbush Wrecker Service and will be stored in Goodrich. The scene was cleared shortly before 12 noon.
