US-59 Goodrich, just south of the south end of Loop 393 (south bound side of 59) Sunday afteroon
Rollover Accident, 1 Deceased, 2 Flown to Houston, GOODRICH, October 1, 2017 - Shortly after 4 pm on October 1, 2017, a white 2003 Chevy Suburban, driven by Alberto Martinez, 47, of Columbus Mississippi, was north-bound on US-59 when his vehicle left the pavement to the left (driver's side tire just went off the edge). Martinez over corrected right, then over corrected back left, entered the median and then into the south-bound lanes of 59 where his vehicle rolled through both south-bound lanes and came to rest upside down in the grass on the right side of 59 south (south of the south end of Loop 393). Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the Livingston and Goodrich Volunteer Fire Departments, Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Troopers Ashlee White, Kevin Burman, Zach Lenderman, and Nick Hatton with the Texas Highway Patrol. Martinez and his 17 year old nephew, Gabriel Garcia, were both flown to Hermann Hospital in Houston by Life Flight with undisclosed injuries. Sadly, Martinez's mother, 71 year old Esperanza Ramirez Tavera, was killed during the accident. All traffic on the south-bound side of 59 was blocked during investigation, flight operations, and cleanup. This accident remains under investigation and it is not known why Martinez's vehicle left its lane of traffic. Justice of the Peace, Robert Johnson performed an inquest at the scene. Tavera was transported from the scene by a first call car from Cochran Funeral Home. A rollback wrecker from Ken's Towing recovered Martinez's vehicle and it will be stored at Harrison Body Shop in Livingston.
