Name Released from Fatal Accident, BARNUM, September 13, 2017 - The name has been released by the Texas Department of Public Safety in reference to yesterday's fatal accident (09/12/17) off FM-287 East near the Polk County Line. Bryan Alfred, Jr., 63, of Chester, was east-bound on FM-287 East when his red 2004 Ford Ranger veered into the oncoming west-bound lane and slammed into an 18 wheeler. Alfred was killed on impact.

Fatal Accident, Pickup / 18 Wheeler, BARNUM, September 12, 2017 - At approximately 2:50 pm on September 12, 2017, a red 2004 Ford Ranger (name of driver being withheld) was east-bound on FM-287 East. The driver veered into the west-bound lane and slammed into a west-bound 18 wheeler driven by Steven Coleman, 43, of Jefferson. The pickup spun around and came to rest in the east-bound lane facing west at Darden Road. The 18 wheeler pulled into the grass on the right side of 287. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene, along with the Corrigan and Woodville Volunteer Fire Departments, Lieutenant Mark Jones with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Corporal Ramey Bass, Donny Akers, Darwon Evans, Zach Lenderman, and Sergeant Sam Lattner with the Texas Highway Patrol. The driver of the pickup appeared to have been killed on impact. Coleman was physically okay. Traffic on 287 was partially blocked during investigation and cleanup. Justice of the Peace Jamie Jones performed an inquest at the scene. The driver of the pickup was transported from the scene by a first-call car from Corrigan Funeral Home to Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office. Both vehicles were recovered by Riley Wrecker Service out of Corrigan.
