Driver Falls Asleep, Goes Airborne, LEGGETT, September 4, 2012 - Shortly after 8 am on September 4, 2012, a white 2012 GMC Terrain driven by David Roger North, 56, of Telford, Tennessee, was north-bound on US-59. At that moment, Corporal Sam Lattner with the Texas Highway Patrol was on patrol in the area and witnessed the strange accident. According to Corporal Lattner, North's vehicle left the road to the right, rolled through the grass for a good distance at over 50 miles per hour. North' vehicle came to a dip in the terrain that acted as a ramp. North's vehicle went airborne. "He went up nearly as high as the trees", Lattner said. "All I could see was the under carriage of his vehicle". The vehicle landed upright and came to rest in the grass on the right side of the pavement. Lattner used his radio to get EMS enroute. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene. Another Trooper who was nearby (Trooper Brent Henry) came and assisted Lattner. Additionally, Corporal Lee Rogers with the Polk County Sheriff's Office arrived to help. The Troopers along with EMS personnel from Americare were able to safely extract North from his vehicle. North was transported to Livingston Memorial Hospital with undisclosed injuries. Traffic was not blocked during investigation and cleanup. A rollback wrecker from Riley Wrecker Service out of Corrigan recovered North's Vehicle and it will be stored in Corrigan.
