Accident on 1276 Sends Group of People to Hospital, LIVINGSTON, August 27, 2008 - At approximately 4 pm on August 26, 2008 six people were sent to local hospitals and one person life-flighted in terrible accident. The accident occurred on FM 1276 when a Big Sandy School bus was stopped. As is required by law, all vehicles that would pass the bus from either direction must stop and wait until the bus is back in motion before they can pass. Five vehicles were stopped behind the Big Sandy bus when a Tan Nissan driven by John Tallisun Obe, 17, of Livingston was approaching at a high rate of speed. Obe realized that he needed to stop and attempted but was coming too fast and skidded right into a red 2005 Chevy S-1500 driven by Joseph Dalton Carpenter, 17, of Livingston, Texas. Obe also had 4 other passengers with him in his car: Michael Neal Alec,18, Julian Chase Syllestine, 17, a 14 year old female, and Melton James Abbey 18, all of Livingston. Dalton had his 14 year old sister as a passenger in his vehicle. DPS Trooper Kevin Burman was dispatched to the scene of the accident. Obe, Alec, and Syllestine all suffered incapacitating injuries and Syllestine had to be life-flighted by PHI Helicopter to Hermann Hospital in Houston. All other victims were transported by ambulance to local hospitals in Woodville and Livingston. Citations were issued to Obe for violation of restricted license, failure to control speed, and having a child under the age of 15 in his vehicle with no seat-belt. The other three passengers in Obe's vehicle were issued citations for no seat-belts. Obe's vehicle skidded 190 ft. before colliding with Carpenter's vehicle.
