Motor Scooter Accident Takes Life of Onalaska Man, SPRING CREEK, August 23, 2013 - At approximately 11:40 am on August 23, 2013, a white 2005 Yamaha Road Star motor scooter driven by Donald Daray, 71, of Onalaska, was west-bound on US-190 West. Daray suddenly swerved left to avoid a white 1996 Ford Ranger driven by Leon "Shorty" Harris, of Livingston. Harris pulled in front of Daray from Walding Road. Though he took evasive action, Daray's motor scooter still slammed into Harris' pickup. Daray was ejected from his motor scooter. Both Daray and the motor scooter ended up in the grass on the east-bound side of 190. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department Heavy Rescue Unit, Deputy Mark Dubose with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, and Troopers Donny Akers and Sergeant Nita Bowen (both with the Texas Highway Patrol). Daray was treated at the scene and rushed to Livingston Memorial Hospital by ambulance, Harris was physically okay. Sadly, Daray passed away a short time later. Daray was pronounced dead at 12:33 pm by Justice of the Peace Stephen McEntyre. Traffic on 190 was partially blocked on both sides as the accident was being investigated and cleared. According to Trooper Akers, Leon Harris will be cited for criminal negligent homicide (through the District Attorney's Office). Daray's motor scooter was recovered by Fawbush Body Shop and will be stored in Goodrich. Harris' vehicle was driven from the scene.
