According to Harden, a pedestrian (man) stepped into her lane. Harden swerved in an effort to avoid, but struck the elderly man. The impact knocked the man into the center grassy median. Corporal Javier Segura and Sergeant Craig Taylor with the Polk County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene along with Texan EMS Service and Troopers Kevin Burman and Corporal Ramey Bass with the Texas Highway Patrol. The pedestrian has been identified as Edward M. Kloss, 85, of Livingston. According to Kloss' family, Kloss heard a vehicle strike a piece of metal debris in the road. His family stated that Kloss would go out to the road to clear debris as a courtesy and safety precaution for drivers. Kloss was crossing from the east-side of 59 in the 3100 block (directly across the highway from local TXDOT offices). Sadly, Kloss is believed to have died on impact. Harden was checked by EMS personnel at the scene and then released. Justice of the Peace, Jamie Jones performed an inquest at the scene. A first call car from Cochran Funeral Home transported Kloss to Jefferson County Medical Examiners Office. No citations were issued. This accident remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol. A rollback wrecker from Fawbush Wrecker Service recovered Harden's vehicle and it will be stored in Goodrich.
