Tomball Man Killed in Small Plane Crash, ANGELINA COUNTY, June 27, 2020 – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a report of a plane crash this afternoon, just east of SH 147. The preliminary information indicates at approximately 2 a.m., a Piper Aircraft was flying from Tomball to Zavalla. The pilot is believed to have attempted to land at a private runway on the east side of SH 147. The pilot reportedly clipped the tops of some trees and crashed just north of the runway. The scene of the crash was not located until approximately 12:30 p.m. The pilot is identified as 40-year-old James Duke VanLue from Tomball. VanLue was pronounced deceased at the scene by an Angelina County Justice of the Peace. The FAA and NTSB has been notified and will be conducting an investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
