Major Accident on 146, SCHWAB CITY, June 28, 2012 - At approximately 11:10 pm on June 27, 2012, a maroon 2012 Toyota Highlander driven by Donna Sue Byrd, 52. of Livingston, was north-bound on US-146. Byrd decided to change her direction of travel and attempted a U-turn in the middle of the road. In the middle of her U-turn, Byrd was slammed by a tan 1996 Chevy Astro driven by Benjamin F. Harless, 62, of Rye. The collision left both vehicles stranded blocking the pavement facing north with Harless' vehicle blocking the north-bound lane of traffic while Byrd's vehicle was blocking the south-bound lane. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the South Polk County Volunteer Fire Department and Trooper Darwon Evans with the Texas Highway Patrol. Donna Byrd and her passenger were treated at the scene and loaded onto an ambulance and driven to Memorial Medical Center in Livingston with undisclosed injuries, while Harless was also treated at the scene, loaded onto an ambulance and driven to the hospital. All traffic on 146 was blocked during investigation and cleanup. According to Trooper Evans, Donna Byrd will be cited for failure to turn when safe. A rollback wrecker fromKen's Towing recovered both vehicles and they will be stored at Pollock's Body Shop in Livingston. The scene was cleared before 1 am.
The rear half of Byrd's 2012 Toyota Highlander was slammed by another vehicle when Byrd attempted a U-turn in the middle of 146.
Benjamin Harless' 1996 Chevy Astro came to rest in the north-bound lane of 146. Harless was pulling a small trailer when the accident occurred.
Safety chains kept the trailer attached to Harless' vehicle.
Benjamin Harless was loaded onto an ambulance and driven to the hospital.
Trooper Darwon Evans investigated the accident.
Both vehicles were recovered by Ken's Towing.
