Deputy Austin McCracken observes the gator at a distance.
CREATURES IN THE NIGHT...

Driver Runs Over Huge Gator in the Road, BLANCHARD, June 1, 2018 - Shortly after midnight on June 1, 2018, a sliver 2008 Kia Sorento, driven by Haley Castillo, 25, of Blanchard, was south-bound on FM-2457 when her vehicle ran over a large alligator that was stretched across her lane of traffic (a short distance north of FM-3126).  Fortunately, Castillo maintained control of her vehicle and pulled over to the shoulder about 50 yards past the gator.  Deputy Austin McCracken with the Polk County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the scene along with Corporal Ramey Bass with the Texas Highway Patrol.  Additionally, Game Warden Chelsey Kidder was dispatched to the scene.  The gator was very much alive and dangerous, but also severely wounded and immobile.  Game Warden Kidder used a sidearm to euthenize the beast and end its misery.  The gator was removed and properly disposed of.  Castillo's car was recovered by Ken's Towing and will be stored at Harrison Body Shop in Livingston.
