Fatal Accident North of Corrigan, NORTH POLK COUNTY, May 14, 2020 - At approximately 1:50 pm on May 14, 2020, a white 2003 Mercedes Benz C240, driven by Sheri Lewis, 53, of Grapeland, was north-bound on US-59. Lewis attempted to cross over the south-bound lanes to FM-357 and failed to yield to a south-bound 18 wheeler tanker (hauling gasoline), driven by Steve LaCombe, 71, of Hessmer, Louisiana,. LaCombe's rig impacted the passenger's side of Lewis' vehicle. The impact caused both vehicles to leave the pavement on the south-bound side to the right. They came to rest side-by-side at the woodline on the right side of 59 south. Sadly, Lewis was killed on impact. LaCombe had no injuries. Troopers Ashlee White, Chris Cain, Alan Stanton, and Sergeant Sam Lattner were dispatched to investigate (and were assisted by Troopers from nearby Angelina County). Justice of the Peace, Dooley Johnson performed an inquest at the scene. A first-call car from Cochran Funeral Home transported Lewis from the scene. Both vehicles were recovered by Riley's Wrecker Service out of Corrigan.
