Emergency personnel work to free 24 year old Michelle Warren of Lake Jackson.
Head On Collision North of Corrigan, Alcohol Suspected, CORRIGAN, April 15, 2014 - At approximately 10:20 pm on April 14, 2014 a red 2009 Ford Focus driven by Michelle Leanne Warren, 24, of Lake Jackson, was north-bound on US-59 about three miles north of Corrigan. Her vehicle was suddenly slammed head-on by a white 2011 Honda Pilot driven by Amy Lenora Smith, 42, of Lufkin. Smith was driving south in the north-bound lanes of traffic when she slammed into Warren. The collision caused Warren's vehicle to spin around and come to rest on the right shoulder of 59 facing south, while Smith's vehicle spun around and came to rest on the left shoulder facing north. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with the Corrigan Volunteer Fire Department, Officer Dakota Hernandez with the Corrigan Police Department, Sergeant William Jerry with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Trooper Darwon Evans with the Texas Highway Patrol. Both Michelle Warren and Amy Smith were entrapped in their vehicles as firemen and other emergency personnel worked to free them. Warren was trapped more severely as the impact caused her car to cave in on her pinning her inside her vehicle. Firemen used the jaws-of-life to cut the roof of Warren's vehicle, then continue to slowly and carefully extract her from her car. Warren was flown by PHi Air Medical Helicopter to Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Her male passenger was transported by ambulance to Woodland Heights Hospital and was later flown by helicopter to Hermann Hospital in Houston with severe injuries, where he remains in stable condition. Smith was transported by ambulance to Woodland Heights with undisclosed injuries. All traffic on the north-bound side of US-59 was blocked during investigation, cleanup, and flight operations. Amy Lenora Smith reportedly admitted to have been drinking prior to the accident and may be facing the charge of intoxication assault. Both vehicles were recovered by Riley Wrecker Service and will be stored in Corrigan.
