Moscow Man Killed in Head on Accident, MOSCOW, March 18, 2009 - At approximately 3:05 pm on March 17, 2009, a red 2007 International 18 Wheeler tractor trailer driven by Donnie Sanders, 55, of Houston, was east-bound on FM-62 (approximately 2 miles east of Moscow) when a west-bound white 2001 Dodge 4x4 Truck driven by Javier Alvarez, 51, of Moscow drifted into the east-bound lane. The two vehicles collided head-on. Alavarez had just got off work at a Corrigan/Camden mill and was killed on impact. The 18 wheeler (which was pulling an empty flat bed trailer) caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames and disintegrated on the spot. DPS Troopers Chris Stanbery and Nita Bowen were dispatched to the scene. All traffic on FM-62 was blocked as investigation and clean up proceeded. A hazardous material clean up crew from DLS Environmental was also dispatched to the scene to clean up the environmental mess from the 18 wheeler. After six hours of investigation and clean up, traffic on FM-62 was opened up (9 pm) and traffic fully flowing. Both parties had insurance. Initially, given the clear and dry weather conditions and the early time of day, it is believed that the reason Alvarez drifted into oncoming traffic is because he may have been distracted, however the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
