Man and Small Child Flown to Houston From Major Accident, BIG THICKET LAKE ESTATES, March 1, 2010 - At approximately 3:45 on February 28, 2010, a 4 wheel ATV driven by Wesley W. Boone, 57, of Livingston was south-bound on Tonda Street in the subdivision of Big Thicket Lake Estates when he failed to yield right-of-way to a black 2006 Ford Taurus driven by Donald Eugene Copaus, 68, also of Livingston. Copaus was west-bound on Swick Street when Boone pulled directly in front of Copaus where the streets intersect. Copaus' front end slammed into the ATV. Boon was ejected from his ATV and thrown to the side of the road while his passenger (a six year old boy) was thrown over Copaus' vehicle. Americare Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene, and Liberty County EMS, Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Constable Bubba Piper and DPS Trooper, Chris Stanbery. Piper assisted EMS personnel in stabilizing the child while other EMS personnel tended to Boone who was hollering in extreme pain from serious injuries. Both Boone and the six year old boy were transported to US-146 where two PHI Helicopters landed in the road and transported both to Hermann Hospital in Houston with serious injuries. All traffic on 146 was blocked during PHI Air Medical Operations. Traffic was also blocked Swick and Tonda Street while the accident was being investigated and cleared. Boone is facing a citation for driving an ATV on a county road and could face other citations. The accident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. A rollback wrecker from Ken's Towing recovered Copaus' vehicle and it will be stored at Harrison Body Shop in Livingston while Boone's ATV was recovered by friends. The scene was cleared by 5:15 pm.
