21 Year Old Polk County Man Killed in Traffic Accident, LIVINGSTON, February 12, 2011 - At approximately 1:30 pm on February 12, 2011 a white 2001 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Steven Ray Shown, 21, of North Glen Subdivision, was north-bound on US-59 near Texas Truck Accessories. Shown apparently failed to notice an 18 wheeler directly in front of him that had slowed down for a funeral escort. Shown slammed on his brakes but it was too little too late as his small car slammed into the back of the 18 wheeler. Shown was killed on impact. The Livingston Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene along with Americare Ambulance Service, Officer Ashley Early with the Livingston Police Department and a host of other officers, deputies, and DPS Troopers. The driver of the 18 wheeler, Michael Hewitt, 50, of Carnack, was treated for minor injuries and released. All traffic on the north-bound side of 59 was blocked during investigation and cleanup. Justice of the Peace David Johnson performed an inquest at the scene. A first-call car from Cochran Funeral Home recovered Steven Shown. A rollback wrecker from Ken's Towing recovered Shown's vehicle and it will be stored at Harrison Body Shop in Livingston. The scene was cleared and traffic fully flowing by 4 pm.
