1 Critical After Major Accident, Alcohol Suspected, BEACON BAY, January 19, 2019 - At approximately 10:05 pm on January 18, 2019, a blue 1990 Toyota Corolla was south-bound on FM-350 South. The driver, Ryan Barnes, 21, of Livingston, drove at a high rate of speed off the end of 350 and impacted a utility pole, a steel guard rail, and crashed through a chain link fence owned by Trinity River Authority. Americare and Allegiance Ambulance Services were dispatched to the scene, along with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department Heavy Rescue Unit, Sergeant Adam Norris with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Troopers Kevin Burman, Donny Akers, and John Allen with the Texas Highway Patrol. According to witnesses, the driver and another young male exited from the vehicle and fled towards the nearby Wet Deck Club (and left their critically injured friend in the car). The two youngsters were returned to the scene a short time later. The two passengers are identified as Devon Skiles, 18, of Livingston, and Jarrett Martin, 24, of Livingston. (Martin was in critical condition). Firemen and emergency personnel carefully removed Martin from the vehicle. Martin was transported by ambulance to a landing zone where a medical helicopter landed and flew him to Hermann Hospital in Houston. When questioned by Trooper Burman, Barnes denied that he was the driver. After an investigation, witness statements, and other evidence, it was discovered that Barnes was in fact the driver. During a vehicle inventory, Troopers pulled a large, half empty bottle of whiskey from the back floor board of the car. Barnes and Skiles were both transported to Polk County Jail. Barnes is facing charges of intoxication assault, false statements to police, and other citations. Skiles is facing charges of minor in possession and minor in consumption of alcohol. Barnes' vehicle was recovered by Ken's Towing and will be stored at Harrison Body Shop in Livingston.
