Auto Accident Involving Child on Bike, ONALASKA, January 9, 2009 - At approximately 6:46 am on January 9, 2009, the Onalaska Police Department was dispatched to FM-3459 at St. Andres Cemetery Road for an accident involving an automobile and a child on a Bike.  Upon arrival, Corporal Maddox of the Onalaska Police Department observed a van in the ditch on the west side of FM-3459 and a bicycle lying behind the vehicle.  The driver of the vehicle stated the child was still under the vehicle and was in desperate need of medical attention.  Americare EMS was already on the scene and attempting to treat the victim where he lay, however, due to being pinned under the vehicle, medical attention was severely hampered until volunteers from the Onalaska Volunteer Fire Department began to arrive.  Chief Ron Gilbert, Kenny Sheffield, Roy Newport, Royce Newport and Sammy Weese made a decision that they could no longer wait for equipment to arrive.  The men manually lifted the vehicle off the child while James Arnett slid the child from under the vehicle.  The child was taken by Americare EMS to Livingston Memorial Hospital with escort assistance provided by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, thus expediting transport of the child.  The child's condition (whose name is being withheld) as of 10:30 am was stable but critical.
