Leigh Michelle Hight is a combat veteran of Afghanistan.
Canine Sworn in With Corrigan PD, CORRIGAN, October 31, 2012 - At 8 am on October 31, 2012, a swearing in ceremony was held at Corrigan City Hall. The occasion was the swearing in of a new Officer on the Corrigan Police Force. The new female officer is of the 4 legged variety and is quite capable of defending herself and others. Officer Leigh Michelle Hight, a police canine, was sworn in by City Secretary, Thelma Stanford. Hight was sworn in along side her partner, Officer James Hight. James has been working with Leigh for 2 years. She has served in Afghanistan and has combat experience and knows first hand about bad guys and dangerous situations. She has a keen sense of smell and can detect odors that humans can't. She's properly trained to sniff out narcotics, even dope that may be sealed in a ziplock bag, or buried in something to conceal its scent. Hight can sniff out marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and a surplus of other drugs and narcotics. Additionally, she's been trained to attack on command, and stop attacking on command. She can track people on foot (either for criminal apprehension or for rescue purposes). She is protective of police officers and will attack if her partner is in danger. The car that Leigh rides in is equipped with remote control doors so that she can be released without the officer having to return to the vehicle. This versatile German Shepherd can also be used in crowd control situations. On command she will chase and tackle a suspect. If the suspect continues to resist, she will bite and hold until ordered to release. Careful training is required to ensure that she does not bite the suspect if he complies with the officer's commands. Also in attendance at the ceremony were City Manager, Grimes Fortune and Corrigan Police Chief, Darrell Gibson.
